Summary: The recent earthquake of magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale in Nepal affected 8 million people in different districts of the country. The present estimation of loss has been calculated to, approximately, be US $ 5 billion. This is approximately 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. In terms of social losses, till date 7000 persons have been reported as dead and a further 14000 causalities have been reported. Almost 300,000 homes have been partially or fully damaged making thousands of people homeless. Public infrastructures such as schools, health posts, roads, water supply, and irrigation have been majorly damaged. Many people have suffered much, but the plight of the post-partum mothers and infants are heartbreaking.
